Santa Clarita Outdoor Kitchens: Outdoor Kitchen Remodel and BBQ Island Refresh in Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita Outdoor Kitchens covers outdoor kitchen remodels in the Santa Clarita Valley — the tiled and stuccoed BBQ islands built across Valencia, Saugus and Canyon Country in the 1990s and 2000s — where the crew that is booked decides what can stay, replaces the top, the grill and the doors, re-clads the island, or adds a sink, refrigerator or bar leg.

Keep, refresh or rebuild

Island condition Usual remodel Notes
Sound block frame, dated tile top New granite or porcelain top, new grill and doors The most common refresh
Sound frame, cracked or stained stucco Patch and re-stucco, or clad in stone veneer Veneer adds weight; the frame is checked
Rusted grill, opening the wrong size New grill with the opening re-cut or filled Grill sizes changed over the years
Wood-framed island Rebuild in block or steel Wood around a grill is the reason to start over
Settled or cracked slab under the island Remove, new pad, rebuild A new top on a moving base cracks again
Island too small for the family Add an L leg or a bar Matching the old finish is the hard part

New grill, old opening

Grill cutouts are not standard between brands or between generations of the same brand. A new 36 inch grill can be an inch wider or two inches deeper than the 1998 unit it replaces. The options are to re-cut the opening in a block island, add a stainless filler trim, or choose a grill whose cutout fits — a measurement taken before the new grill is ordered.

Insulated grill jacket. In a combustible frame, the grill sits in an insulated jacket made for that model, which keeps its heat away from the island structure.

What the numbered markers show

  1. The jacket is a double-walled liner with an air gap or insulation between the walls.
  2. The jacket is sized to the specific grill; a jacket from another model does not fit or protect correctly.
  3. In a noncombustible island frame, the maker's instructions still decide whether a jacket is needed.

Adding to an existing island

  • A bar leg — a new L leg at 42 inches with a ledge for stools, built to meet the old island at a clean joint.
  • A sink — a new cabinet and a drain trench back to the house, the biggest utility job of a remodel.
  • A refrigerator — an outdoor-rated unit in a new or widened cabinet with a GFCI circuit.
  • Lighting — under-counter and task lights on a new circuit.

Matching an old stucco texture or a discontinued tile is rarely perfect; re-cladding the whole island in one new finish often looks better than a patched match.

Utilities on an older island

Older islands often have a gas line sized for one grill, no shutoff inside the cabinet and an outlet that is not GFCI-protected. A remodel that adds burners or appliances is the right time to bring the gas sizing, shutoff, venting and outlets up to the current rules, under the permit the work requires.

A remodel is the moment to fix what is hidden: the framing, the gas line and the outlet.

Outdoor Kitchen Remodel & Refresh — common questions

How much does an outdoor kitchen remodel cost?

It depends on what changes. A granite or quartz top upgrade typically runs $1,500–$4,000 and a new built-in grill $1,500–$4,500 installed; rebuilding the island is priced like a new one at $700–$1,100 per foot for a straight run.

Can stone veneer go over an old stucco island?

Often, if the frame is block and sound. The stucco is prepared with lath and a scratch coat so the veneer bonds, and the added weight is checked against the slab.
