Grill and burner repairs

Most built-in grill trouble is maintenance: grease buildup, corroded burners and spiders that nest in the burner tubes in the dry season. Burners, igniters, flame tamers and grates are replaceable parts on most quality built-in grills, usually with the old grill staying in the island. A firebox that has rusted through is the point where a new grill head makes more sense than parts.

Cracks, stains and settling

Hairline cracks in stucco are common and cosmetic; cracks that run through block, step at mortar joints or keep widening point to the slab or footing. Tile tops with loose tiles usually have water under them. Stained grout and etched concrete tops can often be cleaned and resealed, but a top with a crack across it or loose tiles across the run is a replacement.

Repair what wears; rebuild what moves.

When repair stops making sense

  • The island is framed in wood and the grill has charred it.
  • The slab under the island has settled and the island has cracked through.
  • The grill's firebox has rusted through and parts are no longer made.
  • Every door, drawer and the top need replacing at once.

At that point the cost of repairs approaches a refresh or a rebuild, and the remodel page covers how those are approached.

Outdoor Kitchen Repair — common questions

Can a rusted grill be repaired?

Burners, grates, igniters and flame tamers usually can be replaced. A firebox or housing rusted through is generally the end of that grill.

Why does the outdoor outlet trip when it rains?

Usually water in the box or a cover that is not an in-use type. A weather-resistant in-use cover and a new GFCI receptacle fix most cases.
