Santa Clarita Outdoor Kitchens: Building an Outdoor Kitchen Under a Patio Cover in Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita Outdoor Kitchens covers outdoor kitchens built under patio covers in the Santa Clarita Valley — under an existing solid or lattice cover, or with a cover added as part of the kitchen job — where the grill's overhead clearance, a vent hood, smoke and heat management and lighting are planned so both the cook and the cover stay comfortable.

Why shade changes how often a kitchen gets used

An uncovered island in the valley is a morning and late-evening kitchen from June to September; the countertop and the stools are too hot in between. Shade over the cook and the bar extends that to most of the day, protects appliances and stone from direct sun, and opens up countertop choices like quartz that do not belong in full sun.

A kitchen in the shade gets used at 4 p.m. in July; a kitchen in the sun waits for sunset.

Grill clearance and vent hoods

Overhead situation Usual approach What decides it
High open lattice cover Grill under the lattice, smoke escapes Grill maker's overhead clearance
Solid cover, grill near the open edge Grill under the outer edge, no hood Clearance and how smoke drifts
Solid cover, grill deep under it Outdoor-rated vent hood ducted through the roof Hood maker's sizing and clearance
Low or enclosed cover Hood required, often a larger one Grill BTU and the space around it
Combustible ceiling material Noncombustible panel or hood with listed clearances Maker's instructions

Clearances around a built-in grill. Every built-in grill has a minimum clearance to combustible materials above, behind and beside it, listed in its installation manual.

What the numbered markers show

  1. Overhead: the distance from the grill to the ceiling or beams, the one that matters most under a patio cover or pergola.
  2. Rear: the distance from the back of the grill to a house wall or a post.
  3. Side: the distance to the counter ends or any wood trim nearby; every distance comes from the maker's manual for that model, which is why no numbers are printed.

Solid, lattice or louvered

  • Lattice or open-beam — partial shade, smoke escapes freely, the least heat built up under it.
  • Solid cover — full shade and rain protection, needs a vent hood if the grill is deep under it, and room for a ceiling fan and lights.
  • Louvered aluminum — adjustable; opened over the grill while cooking, closed for shade.

On a kitchen job the cover is part of the plan: its posts, footings and height are set around the island, and the cover is designed and permitted together with the rest of the kitchen.

Fans, lights and heat under the cover

An outdoor-rated ceiling fan over the bar moves the hot air the grill creates; pendant or recessed lights in the cover light the counter at night; and a radiant heater on its own circuit takes the chill off December evenings. All of them need power planned before the ceiling is closed.

Outdoor Kitchen Under a Patio Cover — common questions

Can a grill go under an existing patio cover?

Often, if the grill maker's overhead clearance is met or an outdoor vent hood is installed, and the cover material can take the heat. The cover's height and construction decide which.

Is a vent hood required outdoors?

Under a solid or low cover it is usually the way to meet the grill maker's clearance and keep smoke off the ceiling; in the open it is not needed.
